The most pernicious activism : open voting
Like many Americans, I've been pretty disgruntled with how the present Republican administration has botched up so much in an extremely short time. 100 years of international diplomatic progress: gone. 230 years of personal freedom: gone. 60 years of international goodwill: gone. 6 years of global sympathy: gone.
Trouble is, although I've generally voted Democratic for the last many years, I am in no way convinced that the Democratic leadership is ready to do their part to restore the American democracy. So what does one do?
I had a thought this morning that I rather like, but it would take a lot to figure out the right way to do it. I like it because it is at once subversive, yet in no way treasonous or violent. It's very simple: create an open voting infrastructure not owned by the government but decentralized yet verifiable and trustworthy. Then start running small scale elections and polls through it. At some point, if the open voting infrastructure is able to reliably handle large-scale national elections, then let them happen. If the results of elections run on the open voting infrastructure in some way contradict the will of elected leaders, then the opening voting platform would have adequate legitimacy to overrule the elected leadership.
Very democratic, very revolutionary. Of course, that's a lot to pull off--but it would be a true democratic revolution. Not by force, not by will, but by vote.
