The Soul Guilds

I remember in Angel Season 5 that the great, ancient demon-god Illyria declared that she once lived "seven lives at once," finding it a terrible sentence to remain trapped within but a single, weak body.

How interesting it would be if reincarnation were real, that we could have multiple incarnations concurrently. How interesting it would be if the truly evolved among us (both good and evil) could discover that they were in fact the same entity but expressed in different physical forms, different life histories, different personalities. What each incarnation experienced would be available to all incarnations, if the incarnations were enlightened to their true nature.

The larger collections of these incarnations would be referred to as Soul Guilds. Each Guild would share a single soul among all of its multiple active incarnations. Power would arise from discovering that you were an incarnation of just such a multiplicitous entity, and learning how to coordinate the actions of all the incarnations in the Guild to effect a common goal. Like avatars of Vishnu, the Soul Guilds would be the truly enlightened who walked the earth. Sadly, they would also wage their wars with mere singular mortals as their pawns.

Each Guild would be a collection of incarnations all sharing the same soul, aligned towards their common causes. The most powerful guilds would not only have larger numbers of incarnations active at the same time, but would have a long continuous memory. Old incarnations would help new ones find the guild. Truly great guilds would seek themselves deeper back in time, to find their roots before they remembered them, and in so doing, perhaps take a chance at altering their own history.

Why is that this world that actually is always seems just slightly less interesting than it could be?
